Big Data for Science, Technology, and Innovation

STIP uses a novel methodological suite of data sources and tools. Data sources include publications, patents, funding, CV analysis, and surveys. Tools include search strategies, network analysis, and geographic, disciplinary, and patent mapping. As part of our ongoing research in nanotechnology, we access and analyze datasets of more than 100,000 patents and a million research publications. We are lead users of VantagePoint text mining software. We are also active in identifying unstructured forms of text through social media, e.g., twitter, and websites. The breadth of research spans qualitative and quantitative fronts.

Survey and Case Study Research

STIP has strong expertise in survey and case study research for science, technology, and innovation policy. Our survey work includes the ongoing Georgia Manufacturing Survey, studies of highly creative scientific researchers, and Knowledge Content Surveys in Malaysia. Science and Technology Policy Analysis and Evaluation

STIP researchers have undertaken policy analyses of US and Chinese research and innovation systems (for European Union sponsors), and evaluation studies of science, technology and innovation programmes in the US and internationally.

Innovation Co-Lab

STIP is a founding partner of the Innovation Co-Laboratory (Innovation Co-Lab) – a strategic partnership with the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research (UK) and the School of Management and Economics, Beijing Institute of Technology (China) to develop research, exchange, training and related activities in the domain of science, technology, and innovation management and policy.
